“Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him — something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too.” —goodreads
This book was a recommendation by one of my book loving coworkers. I was completely hooked the evening I checked it out, and finished it at the expense of sleep the very same night.
Patrick Ness did a wonderful job setting the tone and emotion of this book. There was a suspense and urgency when he wanted you to feel suspense and urgency, and the mystery of why their world is the way it is will keep you speculating until the big reveal.
You will need a stomach when reading this book. Some of the events of this story may be upsetting, so prepare for that.
In my opinion, good apocalyptic story will push what you are comfortable with, but still have optimism, hope, and with the characters trying to stay true to their humanity.
